This feels true to me because insight is not the same thing as integration. You can understand your patterns perfectly and still have a nervous system that reacts as if the old threat is still happening, which is exactly why trauma work can’t stop at explanation. What changes people isn’t just the story they tell about themselves, but whether the body and emotional system actually learn something new.

I really appreciate this distinction Valerie. Insight creates clarity, but clarity alone does not reorganize the nervous system. Many people understand why they react the way they do long before they experience real change. Integration happens when new emotional and relational experiences become embodied, allowing the brain and body to learn something different. Understanding opens the door, but experience is what creates lasting change.
